Diy Home Office Desk
With world that changed in 2020 and most people working from home, I needed to create a work space I could enjoy as I would spend a lot of my time there. After March 2020, I decided to convert one room into an office, which needed custom furniture.
I have a keen interest in woodwork as a side hobby, so after a colour revamp, some fresh paint and funky colours, I decided to custom make my own desk, floating style, to create more floor space, and with a cavity for minimal storage and cable management.
The actual making of the desk was long before this post and it took way to longer to get to the interesting part, only now March 2021. I decided to take the desk out to start with minor modifications. Adding extra wire hole grommets, top and bottom, for neater cable management, but also routing out a cutout to fit an LED Aluminium channel for a 5 meter RGB strip light.
Not just to create a fully custom, futuristic look to it, but also functional. Of course with most things I attempt, somehow my projects have to connect to my smart home system, one way or another. As with a previous post of the under bed LED lights I added, this has similar function.
If I am focusing on work, with or without earphones and I don't want to be surprised with someone waking in behind me. I solve this issue using the lights. If my office door is still open (determined with a wireless door sensor) at 17:00 then my office lights comes on and when my wife arrives home from work, the LED strip changes from Teal to Red, to alert me that someone is here. After she has pulled the car into the garage and closed the door, the lights change back to Teal, this way I know she is in the house, also that the door was not left open, otherwise the light stays red.
Below are some pics of the table, the making and the final product.
